Brown Joins Senate Repeal Of Independent Payment Advisory Board

Statement

Date: June 13, 2011
Location: Washington DC

Today, U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) will join the Senate repeal effort of the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) created under President Obama's federal health care bill.

The legislation would immediately eliminate IPAB, a 15-member board of political appointees empowered under the health care bill to make changes to Medicare that could significantly affect the quality of patient care.

"Unelected bureaucrats should not have the power to make major changes to Medicare with very little transparency or accountability," said Brown. "Elected representatives who answer directly to their constituents should be the ones working together to bring down the costs of Medicare. A better solution to the challenge of making Medicare solvent is for Congress to clearly identify the proposed changes and give seniors a chance to comment on them."
